At the beginning of March I found my way to Budapest. There I had the chance to have a meeting both with the National Board of RT Hungary as well as with Round Table 1 Budapest. I had a very interesting and fruitful exchange of ideas with the National Board. Among other things these were:
- The National President, Viktor Takács, informed me that RT Hungary is organizing the National AGM, in the charming resort area of Balaton Lake, an area where there is no Round Table. The decision to host the AGM there was in the hope that:
- Through their existing contacts they have in the area plus any new ones that they will gain from the AGM
- Through the presence of not only the local tablers but also the international tablers in the area, plus
- The publicity they will get from local press, not only by the fact that they will have the event there, but also from the fact that they will donate the benefits of the event to a local charity plus
- Posters that will put up to advertise the event in the area,
They hope to be able to spread the word of Tabling in the area, in the hope of attracting prospective Tablers and open a new table in the city that will host the AGM.
- To add to this, the National IRO Zoltán Ábry, is currently finalizing an even more grand idea, one that foresees the opening of up to 10 new tables and attract up to at least 100 new members within the next 5 years. His plan even includes detailed analysis of how to approach the prospective tablers, as well as how and who will visit them. One good idea is that they plan to organize every 3 months a so called Rally Tour (like a Mass Tour) where the current members of Round Table Hungary together with international friends (and why not members of other countries’ National Boards and from the RTI Board) would join in and visit each day a different prospective table and teach them what Round Table is all about.
- The work of Round Table Hungary does not stop here. The 2 tables of Budapest are doing a marvellous charity work, the 'Maciakcó' (Teddy Bear Action). It includes the selling of Teddy Bears and using these proceeds to buy medical equipment. The 2 tables in Budapest raised 12.000 euros last year, and purchased life saving equipment for the Hungarian Research and Rescue Dog's foundations. They are the famous research groups, who travel anywhere in the world, immediately, when there is a major disaster occurs.
- The very active RT 3 Eger also has several charity programs. Beside the local social project they also raised funds to support less fortunate schools in Transylvania.
- See also separate article “Triglav Challenge” by Viktor Takács
These are very promising news from a small association, like RT Hungary which now has only 3 tables and about 35 active tablers. Let us wish them all the best. Even if they achieve to open 1 or 2 new tables in the near future it will be a great achievement for them. As an old proverb says:
“A journey of a thousand miles starts with a Single Step”
I wish RT Hungary all the best

Triglav Challenge - Spreading the word of Tabling to Slovenia
|
|
|
As part of an ongoing partnership between the twin tables of RT1 Budapest (Hungary) and RT 837 Seaford-New Haven (RTBI) representatives from both tablers participated on the Triglav Challenge in October 2007.
The members of the Seaford-New Haven RT 837 Seaford-New Haven table organised a fantastic charity program, to support the Sussex Air Ambulance. They raised funds back home in England, and then lined up at the Julian Alps in Slovenia, to concur the Triglav Mountain. The mighty rock did not give the success easily. There was poring rain, freezing cold, and absolutely exhausting climbing to 2500m above sea level. The exhausted group of 2 dozen tablers, and several guests had an unforgettable night in the hut, above the snow line. The next day, during the descending, they had more pleasant weather conditions, however, the physical torture continued. The Triglav Challenge was an absolutely remarkable idea and achievement. From here, I congratulate again the chief organiser, Mr Robert Blackman.
|

|
With the Triglav Challenge Rob and his tabler friends also intended to bring the local young men's attention to the Round Table. Once the candidates show interest, the 2 tables and Round Table Hungary will actively support the initiative of chartering the first table in Slovenia.

Something is changing in Prague!
|
|
|
My dear Brothers in Table,
In January Newsflash issue I wrote about the intention of RT Czech Republic to grow and become a strong and healthy association of Round Table International. Gladly I report today our first success. After visiting CTM Meeting in Austria and talking about our situation, we can report increased interest in RT in Czech Republic.
During the CTM I mentioned our situation. The support from gathered Tablers was overwhelming, George Psaras, our RTI vice president offered personally his help to come to Prague and support us to grow. During the banner lunch Norbert Zach and Harry Liendl (RT Austria) and John Messina (RT Malta and past EMA Tabler of Year) discussed this issue and since John was on holiday they suggested and asked me whether John Messina (RT Malta) could join me on the way back to Prague in order to attend the RT 1 Prague meeting that was due to be held on Monday evening. My answer was YES.
Whilst in Prague John & I spent a wonderful two days which ended with our regular meeting. During this meeting we also had three other prospective members who attended a Round Table meeting for the very first time and after seeing and getting some details of what Round Table is really about I must say that they seem to be keen in joining our movement.
Thank you John for coming to Prague!
During our meeting John became godfather of Rej as he inducted him as a Tabler. Rej was one of our prospective members who had been attending some meetings over the past few months and who is now a proud Tabler of RT1 Prague.
I am very happy about this development and we here in Prague are all working whole heartedly towards the change to grow. By the way, if you know someone in Prague - Let us know!
RT Czech Republic needs a change, we are the change.

Memorandum of Understanding Ratified by Indian Ocean islands
At the Round Table Madagascar Annual General Meeting
During last RT Madagascar AGM held between 26-28 October, three main islands of the Indian-ocean ratified a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote and enhance fellowship within the region. The main terms of the memorandum constitute a basic framework to encourage reciprocal exchanges based on friendship that may include twinning, offshore national board meetings, and attendance to each other's respective AGMs as well as developing and promoting common events. One possibility could be funds for community projects being organised and raised in our region for the support of another.
A recent example was a call from RT Madagascar for the project of extension to existing building for orphans home Akany Solofo (Antananarivo). Round Table France through its 22nd region (La Reunion) has showed keen interest to support Madagascar's project.
New 2007-08 RT Madagascar President Heritiana Randriamanantena took office from Bhimal Reedha, at the presence of international guests from Round Table France: Christophe Benard (National Past President), Laurent Landry (National IRO), Quim Dias (President 22nd Region), Eric Phalippou (IRO 22nd Region), 7 tablers from La Reunion, 4 tablers from Marseille and Round Table Mauritius: Sanjoy Gokulsing (National President), Paul Ah Leung (Immediate Past President) Khalil Edathally (National Secretary), Ganesha Singaravelloo (National Treasurer), Richard Rault (Past National IRO), 3 tablers and 1 prospective together with local tablers from Madagascar Tables no.1,2 and 3.
The president's banquet was held on Saturday 27th October Hilton Hotel Tananarive to close activities for the AGM which had kicked-off a week earlier with the Diego Suarez pre-tour. Future upcoming events have been discussed and planned for the year ahead: April 2008: TRF 22 AGM, May 2008: RT Mauritius AGM

Round Table Czech Republic Needs Your Help!
|
|
|
My dear tablers,
After visiting the world IRO meeting in Brasov and Capital Meeting in Brussels I found out that we are not alone.
Here is my report from Czech Republic, Prague, heart of Europe, city with 1,2 million inhabitants, centre of business for Central Eastern Europe, target of many tourist for its historical beauty, wonderful city to live and be an international Tabler.
Tabling in Czech Republic started in Prague after the concept was brought in from Germany, Austria, Netherlands, RTBI and RTI. Especially tablers from RT49 Weiden helped our founding members to ADOPT, ADAPT and IMPROVE ideas and practises functioning all around Western Europe and indeed already in some former Eastern bloc countries.
RT1 Brussels got involved heavily with the Prague Tablers and thus in autumn 1992 RT1 Prague was chartered. We personally thanked them in Brussels during the Capital Meeting. The Prague charter went down in history for more than 600 Tablers from all over Europe participated.
In 1992 we chartered RT2 Ceske Budejovice which was closed recently.
In 1997 we opened RT3 in the city of Pisek which is doing well.
Here in Prague we have only 4-5 active members and about 3-5 oldies attending regularly our meetings. We need your help!
How can you help? Find out if any of your members are now living in Prague, Pisek or anywhere else in the Czech Republic or fly frequently here. Publish this request in your national magazine or write one up yourselves.
Let's try to help us grow; lets bring international tabling to our tables in the Czech Republic.
We want to have at least 13 active, young tablers at the end of 2008 in each of our tables, please support us in this task. If we reunite our efforts as tablers on international level we will be strong and healthy on local level again. Also please help us in setting up new tables in other cities.
From our side we will try even harder to increase our membership and we promise that this will happen with your support and encouragement.
Your in Table,
Henry

Working for the revival of Round Table 1 Istanbul, Turkey
|
|
|
In the beginning of last October, Round Table 28 of Zug, Switzerland, hosted Dan Hay, the National IRO and immediate past president of Round Table Israel. At the meeting was also present Vesa Pajasmaa, the National President of the Round Table Switzerland and his vice president Marco P. Rudolf. The two Tables decided to cooperate in trying to help RT Turkey to work again. One of the idea is to have the second SEM-TM (South East Mediterranean Tablers Meeting) in Istanbul in the coming March. The two Associations will try to be in touch in the coming weeks with the Turkish past tablers to try to organise this meeting. More information will be circulated to all the IROs when available.

Round Table New York Needs Your Help!
|
|
|
I have communicated with RT USA and specifically with the RT1 New York Chairman and National IRO. RT USA has now two active tables, one in New York and one in Washington, DC. New York has 7 active members.
In view of this I have sent an e-mail to RT Great Britain & Ireland and RT Netherlands and asked them to help out. I am asking the same of you. RT USA is a small association and in needs our help.
How can you help? Find out if any of your members are now living in New York or Washington or Chicago. Find out if any of your members are frequent flyers to these cities. Publish this request in your national magazines or write one up yourselves. Let’s try to help this small association grow.
It will be an achievement for this year if the two clubs go to ten or twelve members each. Our RTI Treasurer Shiv will be visiting the New York table very soon and I asked the Chairman of RT1 New York to also ask the Tablers from Washington to attend the meeting (if feasible)
Let’s Adopt, Adapt and Improve! Let’s help RT USA grow!

Buffalo - The Drinking Game
|
|
|
Rules
The rules are very simple, and involve which hand you may use to drink.
1) You can hold your drink with either hand, but Buffalo's must only drink with their left hand.
2) You may be Buffaloed without a badge, but you must be wearing one to buffalo someone
3) You may not deliberately Buffalo yourself
4) Your membership is for life.
5) Use the Buffalo greeting when greeting fellow Buffaloes
6) If someone drinks with their right hand, you may yell/shout or scream "Buffalo" and that person must finish his/her drink.
7) The wording after being Buffaloed is "That was most reasonable, thank you"
8) He must then put his glass on top of his head and order another glass
History
It is said that the history of buffalo stems from the Wild West, where it was essential to be able to shoot anyone at anytime. Therefore it was important never to drink your drink with the hand you would normally shoot with, which gave birth to the rule of the non-dominant hand. Because the game essentially was a matter of life or death, it could never be stopped but would run continually throughout one's life. The game was then perfected during the Gold Rush by the famous pioneer "Chris Jones", a man amongst legends. Jones would use the drinking game as a strategy to intoxicate rival pioneers and then proceed to steal their gold

Report from RT Israel - Arabs and Jews working together
|
|
|
At the EMA’s last conference, held in Malta in early July 2006, Round Table Israel received the title of “Table of the Year” for the region of Europe, the Middle East, and America. The title was bestowed for its activities in bringing Jews and Arabs closer together, as manifested in the establishment of table number 10 in Israel in the Arab city of Taibe.
The earning of the “Table of the Year” title marked the end of a long, difficult process begun two years earlier by Round Table Israel’s then president Oren Traisman, who joined with Attorney Ahmed Haj Yehya, first chairman of table 10, in establishing the first Arab table in Israel.
When the idea was first raised of establishing a round table in an Arab city in Israel, many members of Round Table Israel thought it impossible. Some thought it would be difficult to recruit members in an Arab city who would agree to belong to an organization that until that moment had been purely for Jews in Israel. Some thought there would be tablers who would see this activity as a sign that the table was taking a political position in support of more moderate positions in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But they all realized with time that the spirit of the Round Table organization is stronger than anything else, and that the establishment of the table did not involve an entirely apolitical organization’s taking a political position, but rather a position intended to strengthen one of the organization’s important goals: creating harmony between people in a country in which the Round Table is active, and between them and tablers worldwide.
It was no accident that Simon Cusens, then President of Round Table International, said last April when he presented the Taibe table with its charter, that if all of the people in the world were members of the Round Table, there would be no more wars. We in Israel believe in this. For this reason, among others, we are currently working to establish a table in Amman, Jordan. Another initiative of Round Table Israel is the organizing of a regional conference for Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, and Israel, to take place between the 11th and the 14th of next January (2007) in Israel, in Eilat. This is a conference we’ve called SEM-TM, a meeting of tables from the southeast Mediterranean. At the conference, we plan to raise various ideas for joint activities, among others also including the participation of the core group that in the past attempted to set up a table in Lebanon. The conference is open, of course, to any tabler in the word, and any who is interested is invited.
Since the Taibe table was granted the charter, it has been working alongside the other five active tables in Israel: two tables in Haifa (3 and 14), a table in Tel Aviv and environs (table 5), a table in Yavneh and environs (table 8), and a table in Shoham and Modi’in (table 7).
At this time we are working hard to establish three additional tables: a table in Ashdod (table 9), a table in Zichron Ya’akov and environs (table 6), and the crowning glory, a Druze table in the Druze city of the Carmel (table 19)

The Side by Side Experience
|
|
|
An evolution of RTI towards ‘Side by Side’:
Due credit must be given to Immediate Past RTI President Tom Albrigtsen for initiating dialogue for working closely with LCI (Ladies Circle International).
RTI may claim the existence of an International President between1948 and 1960 then again as from 1991 to date. The 30 year Presidential gap came about following the success of the World Council of Service Clubs, known as WoCo, into which RTI became absorbed during these three decades.
Following growing discontent by WoCo stakeholders in the 80’s, RTI chose, in 1991, to transform back into an institution in its own right and away from the shadow of an largely dysfunctional WoCo.
Though the RTI President, Regional Chairmen and their deputies were officially in position, these Officers seldom met formally, leading to a regionalisation of RTI’s EMA, Africa and Asia regions and gradual detachment from a global, synchronised Organisation.
Following the Reykjavik changes of November 2004, a new RTI Board of 5 officers and a Single RTI Constitution replacing the three regional ones came into being. The 5 RTI Officers consisted of the three regional Chairmen, a VP and President, ensuring direct representation and synchrony of all three regions at International Board level.
In designing the new RTI formalities, LCI’s website provided a good basis for influence in terms of needed guidelines, documents and procedures for meetings, Events or other administration processes. This process influenced RTI into initiating dialogue with LCI in view of various synergies that were being noted.
LCI had been operational as a harmonised International Board for years and RTI gained from that experience. The 1st RTI Board under the new structure requested LCI a joint Board meeting to explore the possibilities of learning from each other. The July 2005 historic meeting brought out a natural disposition between both Organisations based on mutual respect for each other as equal but distinctly independent entities but with the common ground of a Community Service and fellowship Agenda.
This cooperation was named ‘Side by Side’ and immortalised by an especially produced Joint RTI-LCI pin highlighting both entities’ logos alongside each other.
Tabling Year 2004/2005 highlights:
The first 2004/2005 RTI Board continued to explore the synergies between RTI and LCI.
Both shared common issues and concerns. Both Organisations struggled to stem dwindling membership. Both needed to extend and increase membership to survive and thrive. Both seemed to be mainly involved with child welfare and education programmes but one major difference- LCI complained that whilst LCI was obliging its members to help and work with Round Table everywhere, Round Table Aims, Objects and Constitutional provisions did not even acknowledge Ladies Circle’s existence.
A Joint Board Meeting was convened on July 2nd 2005 in Cyprus. RTI was represented by Tom, Simon and Pierre whilst LCI had a full Board presence. During this Meeting the idea of selling a joint RTI-LCI ‘Side by Side’ Pin was proposed by Simon to raise funds towards Joint Service and to solidify ‘Side by Side’ as an ongoing cooperation.
Tabling Year 2005/2006 highlights:
. Informal discussions continued in October 2005 between RTI P Simon and LCI IPP Elena also in Cyprus, which is where a similar offer of cooperation was made to Club 41 International during their Half Yearly Meeting there.
Club 41 International welcomed the offer and remarked that this visit was the first to a Club 41 International Meeting by a serving RTI President.
LCI P Sylvia and LCI IPP Elena were invited to address the 1st World IROs Meeting in Athens in November 2005 where the ‘Side by Side’ concept was fully explained and endorsed by all National IROs present.
The various points of agreement and cooperation were further negotiated and ratified under the ‘Side by Side Memorandum of Understanding eventually signed in April 2006 in Zambia with the following Joint Undertakings:
- To promote the expansion and reach of both LCI and RTI Clubs throughout the world.
- To promote cooperation and joint networking at RTI and LCI Club and National levels by means of Service Projects, Fund-raising and Social / Fellowship activities.
- To support at least one common Charity Project in the spirit of Joint Service ideals embraced by both Parties, each year.
- To exchange International Board members’ travel schedules with a view to have one Joint Meeting every year at International Board level. This Meeting will preferably be held at the beginning of each Tabling and Circler year and within four (4) weeks following the last of either Party’s annually held AGM.
- To establish links to and with each other’s websites, and make these easily accessible to membership.
- To maintain a database of either Party’s consenting members Profession types, categorized according to the Professions Index as illustrated in the RTI Directory to promote and encourage professional and Service networking between RTI and LCI’s consenting members.
- To ensure that either Party’s respective Constitutions implement and maintain specific Clauses that reflect the importance of recognizing the need for proactive, ongoing close cooperation between RTI and LCI going forwards.
- To support one another, at all levels, in any other activities not listed herein but perceived to be of mutual benefit to both RTI and LCI Aims and Objects.
What will the RTI Board do further?
Measures had already been taken to address Point 7 at the Costa Rica AGM in 2005. The RTI Aims & Objects now total 4 with the following new RTI Aim No. 3 unanimously adopted at the AGM:
“To initiate, develop and improve working relationships with Club 41 International and Ladies Circle International for fellowship, networking and Joint Service objectives”
RTI has during Tabling Year 2005/2006 supported its first Side by Side initiative by sponsoring LCI’s winning Service Project: an Orphanage in Kathmandu, Nepal led by LC Denmark which initiative has so far raised in excess of Euros 2500, meaning Point 2 and 3 above were also being tackled.
RTI is presently actively pursuing points 1,2 and 8 with a particular emphasis on promoting the concept of extensions via the assistance and cooperation of respective RT and LC Clubs in any territory where the other might not exist.
And what should the National Boards be doing within the RTI countries?
All National Presidents and IROs are being requested to follow on ‘Side by Side’ by pursuing these lines of cooperation:
- The success of ‘Side by Side’ will depend on the support RTI gets from its member Associations in actively seeking inroads with LC at National Board and /or local Club levels.
There is the need to strengthen ties where Ladies Circle and Round Table already exist in a country. It is common knowledge that there are some countries who already work very well together and we encourage them to continue and improve on it. There are also countries which are lacking this cooperation and this is where our two international organisations want to put it to our members and encourage them to cooperate and work ‘Side by Side’ and help towards achieving our goal in:
- Club to Club cooperation
- National Cooperation
- Joint National Project Cooperation
- Membership growth due to Club to Club cooperation. (Those Tablers with non Circler wives can introduce a wife or partner to a new Club initiative and vice versa in the case of Round Table.
- In other words, a Team effort in new countries wanting to form LC or RT Clubs.
- Ladies Circle International has always invited Round Table to speak at their AGMs and LCI was always proud to have our representative. We wish to encourage all National Associations and their RT clubs to extend similar invitations to Ladies Circle at these levels. Participation should go beyond mere speeches, and should include a summary of activities of the association or club to which the invited guest belongs. The letter of invitation should state this point. This will help LC and RT get to know one another and identify areas of cooperation.
- As much as possible the National Associations and Clubs should try to harmonise AGM dates and venues in order to promote maximum cooperation and support for one another. This is already happening in a number of Associations so we can build up from that success story of RT and LC having joint AGMs and still maintaining their individual Meetings but at a common venue and retaining one’s own identity with positive results. Denmark, Great Britian & Ireland, Finland, Israel and other countries have successfully held joint AGM’s. Contact them to hear their positive feedback.
The potential of ‘Side by Side’ is most certainly an understatement. The possibilities are numerous. The concept will be further explained in more detail in planned RTI Fora during 2006 but all RTI member countries are solicited to consider the above 3 points and begin contact with Ladies Circle in order to set a Timetable or schedule which would ideally need to be drawn up jointly with Ladies Circle in your respective countries.
RTI will over the course of this and next year, discuss the option of a joint RTI-LCI AGM in 2009. Support for this initiative needs to be received from the RTI councillors for the Board to pursue this idea.
Go on! Explore the possibilities of ‘Side by Side’ and enjoy what many RTI countries are beginning to enjoy. For those countries already working ‘Side by Side’, there will only be one direction……….looking ahead.

The Maltese ‘Side by Side’ (October 2005)
|
|
|
Dear International Councillors
It is with great pleasure that we inform you that last Wednesday we held an activity ‘Side by Side’. Below please find the excerpt of the Press Release we sent to be published in our local newspapers. Kathleen has just tried to insert the write up on the LCI website but didn't manage so if Isabelle could offer some help. We ask Tablers to insert this on their website too.
It was an event thoroughly enjoyed by one and all and we look forward to the next.
Side by Side
Although Ladies’ Circle both internationally and locally started out as an offshoot of Round Table as the years went by these two clubs had become more and more detached. Due to this both International Boards held a meeting last July in Cyprus and came up with a concept for both clubs to work together: ‘Side by Side’. The latter is the new slogan for this project which may develop in clubs working together nationally, internationally on the lines of friendship and/or community service.
Statistically in Malta very few children are considered to be orphans however many homes run by religious orders or lay people exisit to take care of children from disturbed backgrounds, single parent homes, unwanted children, traumitised children, patchwork families and such other difficult situations. Due to the size of the island fostering in Malta can at times be very difficult whilst adoption is near to impossible. These children are eagerly waiting to share a particular love that is oozing out of them to hopefully receive some love in return. The people who work directly and are in daily contact with these children work wonders so the idea to lend a helping hand and reach out towards both children and carers came to Round Table & Ladies’ Circle Malta.
Round Table and Ladies Circle Malta took on this idea and last Wednesday 12 October 2005 treated children, carers, nuns and guardians from St Rita House, Dar it-Tama, St Joseph Home and Dar Sagra Familija to a cinema event at the Eden Century Cinemas in St Julians. The homes invited to attend this activity were homes which both clubs already help out individually throughout the year through their individual community service projects.
The film selected was ‘Herbie: Fully Loaded’ a light hearted, amusing, entertaining film which is enjoyable for children and adults alike. The children’s enthusiasm shown at the end of the film was enough for Tablers and Circlers to know that the event had been a success.
Paramount Garage and Zephyr Garage kindly offered their services for free and assisted in transporting the children from the respective homes to the cinema and back.
Ian De Cesare, Honarary Member of Round Table 2, who held various roles and high ranking posts both nationally and internationally, helped the two organisations co ordinate this event.
